This extension project based in Wimbledon added approximately 67m to a Victorian property- something that was a fantastic challenge for us. Designed by Voon, Wong & Benson architects, the plan involved seamlessly blending a timeworn house with a modern-looking rear extension.

The scheme was quite demanding in a structural sense, but we couldn’t resist the chance to get involved in such a groundbreaking project. It involved deep trench foundations, a two-storey box frame section, extensive steel work, structural openings and repairs.

We were able to create modern bedrooms, bathrooms and a kitchen with a traditional look. A huge frameless skylight in the living area helped give the property a quiet, minimalistic look as well as a lot of natural light.

Interiors were dramatically different in the older part of the property, compared to the new extension. The older part of the house was completely refurbished yet maintained its old world appeal. We rejuvenated traditional covings and renovated existing ceiling roses to ensure we didn’t lose its traditional appeal. We also installed new Victorian-style fire doors in order to retain the property’s Victorian ambience.

In each room our carpentry specialists created fine pieces of bespoke furniture and fittings with an oak finish; and an old staircase was fitted with new oak cladding. The heating system was revamped with discreet trench radiators and under floor heating in the kitchen and dining area.

To give the client a more reliable and efficient heating system, we also installed motorised programmable valves and completely rewired the house with new LED down lights. On top of that, the whole ground floor was relayed, giving it a traditional oak finish.
